17 years of depression was the most painful yet much needed experience in my journey to find inner peace and truths. That journey gave me the chance to look deep into the nature of reality, how we perceive everything via our victim consciousness and a conditioned mind with expectations, distorted interpretations, and preconception of should/shouldn't, likes/dislikes, good/bad, etc.
The way out of depression and mental suffering is not to think and talk over and over on the things, events, and people that you're depressed or unhappy about. But to start working on removing layers and layers of the filters in your own mind, to then be able to see things as they are and truly forgive and become compassionate towards everyone including yourself.
